Hot Tub Covers, Cover Lifters & Insulation

All hot tubs have one thing in common: they heat water! The key job of a hot tub cover is to conserve as much of that heat as possible but, unfortunately, covers do wear out and the result is an increase in energy consumption and far higher electricity bills! Whether you are looking for a floating cover to add an extra layer of insulation, or for a new hard cover, our replacement hot tub covers are uniquely designed for maximum energy conservation to keep your electric bills to a minimum.

Frequently Asked Questions about Hot Tub Covers

What is the best insulation for my hot tub?

The very best insulation would be to use a floating thermalux insulation cover on the surface of the water with a traditional hard cover, like the one that came with your hot tub, over the top. The best hard hot tub covers are constructed with 150mm (6") thick 25 kg/m3 very high density foam insert cores, wrapped and heat sealed in heavy duty plastic.  You could also protect your investment in the hard cover by using a protective cover cap over the top.

What are the things that I should consider when replacing my hard hot tub cover?

First of all, be sure to choose a cover made from marine-grade vinyl.  Secondly, the density of the foam used for the in-fill board is critical.  It might cost a little more to choose higher density, more insulating foam cores, but you will soon recoup the small extra cost in reduced electricity bills.  You also want to check that that the plastic wrapping around the foam cores is thick (for longevity) and that you are getting a continuous heat seal across the full with of the hinge.  Check out the reviews from past customers, they will tell you whether you are buying an excellent quality cover or not.

How long should my hot tub cover last?

The answer to this question very much depends on how you treat your cover.  Apart from phyisical damage, the first part of your cover to fail will almost definitely be the plastic wrapping around the foam cores.  This plastic wrapping will get brittle and eventually crack because it is constantly in contact with water vapour that has chemical in it.  Once the wrapping cracks moisture will make its way into the foam core, significantly reducing the insulation capability and making the cover very heavy.  So you need to be very careful not to use too much chlorine or bromine and never to close the cover if you have 5ppm of these agressive chemicals in the water.  To avoid chemical damge use an active oxygen based sanitising system, such as eco3spa instead of chlorine or bromine.  To avoid physical damage to your cover don't drag the cover over the ground, always fit and use a cover lifter and don't allow people to sit or walk on the cover.

You can also extend the life of your hard cover by using a thermalux foating insulation cover on the surface of the water which will reduce the amount of chemical laden water vapour incontact with your hot tub lid.

If you treat your cover well and don't over-chlorinate your hot tub then a good quality cover should last up to 5 years.

Do I need to replace the whole cover, I think that the cover skin is fine?

No, if one, or even both, of the foam insert boards have been damaged you can purchase replacement hot tub cover foam inserts. You do have to be very careful to measure correctly for this because, obviously, the new board has to be a good fit for the vinyl cover that you already have.

I just need the vinyl skin, can I just purchase that?

No, unfortunately not.  The reason is because, from long experience, we know that it is virtually impossible to make a skin to properly fit the inserts that you already have.  Also, unless the cover it quite new and there has been some significant physical damage to the vinyl, it is very unlikely that the inserts don't also need replacing.  Or, if they don't need it now they will do very soon.  As mentioned above, the first part of your cover to fail will almost definitely be the plastic wrapping around the foam cores, so purchasing just replacement vinyl is almost definitely a false investment.

Why should I use a hot tub cover cap?

A cover cap will keep your hard cover clean. Whilst, arguably, they are not strictly necessary in Summer, using a hot tub cover cap in Autumn and Winter will protect your hard hot tub cover from debris such as fallen wet leaves and branches and bird poo, all of which will act to degrade your vinyl hot tub lid.
