Hot Tub Covers & Lifters
All hot tubs have one thing in common: they heat water! The key job of a hot tub cover is to conserve as much of that heat as possible. But, many covers fail to do their job well, especially especially covers that have been on a tub for 4 years or more. Unfortunately covers do wear out and when they fail to conserve the heat properly the result is an increase in energy consumption and therefore far higher electricity bills!
Heat loss in a hot tub occurs in four ways: convection, evaporation, conduction and heat radiation - all of these cost you money if the cover doesn't deal with them! Our replacement hot tub covers are uniquely designed for maximum energy conservation, to keep your electric bills to a minimum.
So, enough of the sales talk, let's take a look at the detail!......
Convection - is the movement of heat within air or water, caused by the flow of heated material itself. In a hot tub, we are most concerned about the warm air above the waterline. The spa cover could be compared to the lid on a saucepan in one way: it helps to keep the heat sealed in.
Since convection cannot be eliminated, it is essential that a spa cover be equipped with sufficient straps to keep the cover sealed down snugly against the rim of the spa to seal in heat. Our replacement covers come, as standard, with 4 locking, tie-down straps to promote a good seal between the cover and the spa shell, to better prevent heat from escaping. You might also want to consider the optional heat seal pad that provides additional heat sealing along the cover's hinge area.
Evaporation - is the loss of water and its heat into the air. This is the principle which keeps our bodies from overheating when we perspire in hot weather. A spa cover cannot prevent evaporation, except to the extent that it reduces the effects of ambient outside air.
However, you can minimise evaporation of your hot tub water by electing to 'double wrap' the cover's insulating core. This is the 'wrapper' that fully seals the core with a separate, 1.25mm thick, PVC outer layer. Double wrapping the core introduces another barrier to your hot tub's water surface, thereby reducing evaporation further.
Conduction - is the direct heat flow through matter. Heat is always conducted from warm to cold and always moves via the shortest and easiest route, which, in the case of hot tubs is upward. The way to prevent conduction is through the use of an insulator.
The foam core of a spa cover acts as an insulator, greatly slowing the conduction of heat from the warm water to the colder outside air. Core thickness, quality and foam density determine the spa cover's insulating value and strength. Our standard 4">2" taper hot tub covers with rigid, polystyrene, high-density, EPS100 (20kg/cubic metre) foam fill-in core are much stronger than other brands, which use less dense material. You can always choose to have a replacement cover made with a thicker taper (5">3" or 6">4"), which provides even better strength and optimal insulation.
Radiation - is the transmission of invisible infrared rays. All matter (including the warm water in your hot tub) radiates infrared rays outward and loses heat, unless rays are reflected back.
Hot water energy loss from radiation has been largely ignored by hot tub cover manufacturers until now. Our covers address this area of energy loss in two ways:
A cover lifter will not only make your cover easier to lift and replace, but will also keep it off the ground and protect it from scuffs and damage.
A cover lifter that holds the cover high up can also provide additional privacy, if required.
Hot tub cover lifters come in many different shapes and sizes and you can browse through the features that you prefer using the menu on the left of the page
If you only have a small, light cover then one of these easy-to-use shelves or stands will be a cost-effective way to protect your hot tub cover from damage and dirt while you relax.
These hot tub covers are made to measure to fit any tub up to 2.44m x 3.66m, for larger covers please see our swim spa covers. If your cover is bigger than 2.44m x 2.44m it will be made in three parts (see the product description below).
